The Radio Flyer
Wagon Drive
2026
Twenty little red wagons. Twenty children at Children’s National who get to feel like kids again.
Why a wagon?
A wagon is so much more than a ride.
Radio Flyer Hero Wagons give hospitalized children a way to venture beyond the four walls of their room and out into the world around them. A long stay in the hospital can be lonely and isolating — but a wagon ride turns a quiet hallway into an adventure.
As children explore, they strike up conversations with hospital staff and meet other young patients along the way. Those small moments of connection remind a child of something powerful: they are not facing this alone.
By encouraging socialization and building a real sense of community, Hero Wagons have a meaningful, positive effect on a child’s emotional and mental well-being — exactly when it matters most.
